Abstract:

The Austin classroom building at ECU underwent major renovation in the summer of 2003. Part of this overhaul included the creation of four integrated, technology-enhanced classrooms that serve as working classrooms as well as test beds for the educational technology team. The configurations of the rooms vary, but each room is outfitted with the ability to capture, archive, and stream video from at least one camera in the room. In addition, three of the rooms have access to h.323 videoconferencing equipment. A media server supports the streaming systems and provides multicast capabilities. All of this equipment, and most of the other equipment in the rooms, can be remotely controlled and monitored via IP. The presentation will focus on our experiences with integrating these video systems into technology-enhanced rooms, observations about their use, and some of the challenges to creating an effective working system.

Learn to recognize and avoid the most common pitfalls of first-time renovations of multimedia space. Obtain the tools to help you determine how and when to work with physical plant, architects, contractors, consultants, and vendors to create a facility that meets your needs and budget.
Objectives:
• Understand project phases and timelines
• Learn who’s who on a project team
• Recognize the warning signs before your project heads south

Audience:
DE faculty, technical staff, and other interested parties
